The history of Ca’ Rezzonico
The palace that now houses the Museum of 18th-Century Venice was commissioned by the Bon family, one of the ancient Venetian nobility, to architect Baldassarre Longhena. However, due to the family’s financial difficulties, the work was interrupted, and the palace remained unfinished until Giambattista Rezzonico purchased the building in 1750 and completed it with the help of architect Giorgio Massari.
The palace and its architectural features
The main entrance of the palace is located on the Grand Canal and features innovative architectural solutions for its time. The unique facade, inspired by the Procuratie Nuove of Piazza San Marco, creates a striking play of light and shadow. Inside, the inner courtyard and the portego with a 19th-century gondola add a touch of charm and mystery to the palace.
