The Extraordinary Numismatic Collection
One of the main attractions of the Correr Museum is the extraordinary numismatic collection that includes the almost complete series of coins minted by the Republic of Venice, from its foundation in 820 AD to its fall in 1797. This collection offers a unique insight into the economic and political history of the Serenissima.
The Rooms of Empress Elisabeth of Austria
In the Napoleonic Wing of the museum are the rooms of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sissi. These nine splendid rooms were the refuge of the Austrian sovereign during her stays in Venice, offering an immersion in the court life of the 19th century.
The First Floor Rooms and the Painting Gallery
The nine rooms on the first floor of the Correr Museum evoke the atmosphere of a lagoon Wunderkammer, with objects of sacred art, Northern paintings, and rarities collected by the Venetian patricians of the 16th century. The Painting Gallery, on the other hand, hosts works by Venetian artists such as Cosme Tura, Paolo Veneziano, Peter Brughel the Younger, and Antonello da Messina.
Main Works and Hidden Treasures
Among the main works of the Correr Museum are the paintings by Giovanni Bellini, such as the “Transfiguration” and the Crucifixion of San Salvador, which represent the pinnacle of Venetian Renaissance art. Additionally, the Library at San Vidal and the View of Venice by Jacopo de’ Barbari are hidden treasures worth discovering.
The Ballroom and Odorico Politi’s Fresco
Finally, the Ballroom of the Correr Museum is a sumptuous and fairytale-like environment, decorated in Empire style and dominated by the fresco by Odorico Politi depicting Peace surrounded by Virtues and Geniuses of Olympus. This environment evokes the splendor and refinement of Habsburg Venice after the tumultuous Napoleonic events.
