The History of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana
The Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, also known as the Library of San Marco, has a fascinating history that dates back to 1468 when Cardinal Bessarion donated his precious collection of Latin and Greek codices to the Republic of Venice. This initial nucleus of the library has been enriched over the centuries with donations, bequests, and the incorporation of other libraries from the city and the Republic.
The Monumental Rooms of the library: the Ridotti
Created by Scamozzi, the Ridotti were intended to host the Procurators of San Marco. These rooms, accessible from the Vestibule, were reserved for the high magistrates who oversaw the Church of San Marco, the Treasury, and the arrangement of the entire Piazza. Today, after the restoration from 2015-2017, the Ridotti rooms are open to the public and are part of the integrated tour of the Museums of Piazza San Marco.
The library
The Biblioteca Marciana is housed in the Palazzo della Libreria, designed by Jacopo Sansovino and completed in 1588 by Vincenzo Scamozzi. The library’s facade, with its two levels and the Tuscan order on the ground floor and Ionic order on the upper floor, is a Renaissance masterpiece. Inside, works by artists such as Titian, Paolo Veronese, and Tintoretto enrich the environment, making it a place of extraordinary beauty and culture.
